reducing colour percentages on CMYK

Hi all
We have quite a unique problem. We use IM to create images that then go through a litho printer. i.e. images look fine on screen but when the images get put through the litho printer they are too dark and blurry.
We've tried increasing the tint (images are too white/blurry) and adding unsharp mask is too much.
What however it seems to be is that when you add all the colour percentages up (CMYK) they are adding up to more than 240%, which is whats making the darkness. Is there a way to tell IM to to lessen the percentages automatically, but on a curve so it doesn’t do it too much?
