Iris Extraction

Hi...
I have faced a problem in preprocessing step in iris Extraction.
Algorithm used for iris extraction works good for some images.
For my images it produced poor output(Ex: Hough Transform could not find circle in my image).
Is there any step apply before smoothening the image??
My algorithm works fine for the following image
The same algorithm produce poor output for the following image
Please guide me.
