Shadow / highlight

Is there any command I can use with Imagemagick to do something like the shadow / highlight command under image adjustments in Photoshop?

I have a script which runs Imagemagick with normalize to correct the levels of an image. However, sometimes I found images with dark areas without affecting the rest, increasing the brightness of those areas to make more details visible.
